Text is read on-device with Tesseract OCR. With the On-device engine, a small OPUS-MT model for just the language you picked runs fully in your browser (a few tens of MB, downloaded once and cached) — nothing leaves your device. The Cloud engine sends only the recognized text (never the image) to a free translation service. Rendering samples the background around each line and redraws the translation in place — best on flat/solid backgrounds. Photo backgrounds and artistic type are a known hard case.
