Text is read on-device with Tesseract OCR. With the On-device engine, an NLLB-200 translation model runs fully in your browser — nothing leaves your device (the model downloads once, then is cached). The Cloud engine sends only the recognized text (never the image) to a free translation service. Rendering samples the background around each line and redraws the translation in place — best on flat/solid backgrounds. Photo backgrounds and artistic type are a known hard case.
